Research Backgrounds

Function:

After binding acetylcholine, the AChR responds by an extensive change in conformation that affects all subunits and leads to opening of an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. The channel is blocked by alpha-bungarotoxin.

Subcellular Location:

Cell junction>Synapse>Postsynaptic cell membrane>Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell membrane>Multi-pass membrane protein.

Extracellular region or secreted Cytosol Plasma membrane Cytoskeleton Lysosome Endosome Peroxisome ER Golgi apparatus Nucleus Mitochondrion Manual annotation Automatic computational assertionSubcellular location
Subunit Structure:

Homopentamer (By similarity). Interacts with RIC3; which is required for proper folding and assembly. Interacts with LYPD6. Interacts with the alpha-conotoxin RgIA (By similarity). Interacts with alpha-conotoxins ImI and ImII.

Family&Domains:

Belongs to the ligand-gated ion channel (TC 1.A.9) family. Acetylcholine receptor (TC 1.A.9.1) subfamily. Alpha-7/CHRNA7 sub-subfamily.
